  2. * Osteopontin signature *

  5. Osteopontin is  an  acidic phosphorylated glycoprotein of about 40 Kd which is
  6. abundant in   the   mineral  matrix  of  bones  and  which  binds  tightly  to
  7. hydroxyapatite [1,2,3].  It  is suggested that osteopontin might function as a
  8. cell attachment  factor    and  could  play  a  key  role  in  the adhesion of
  9. osteoclasts to the mineral matrix of bone.

  11. Ostepontin-K is  a  kidney  protein  which is highly similar to ostepontin and
  12. probably also involved in cell-adhesion.

  14. As a  signature  pattern  we selected a highly conserved region located at the
  15. N-terminal extremity of the mature protein.
